Hello! My name is Dan Fiscus and this is Ecosystemics.org, the website for projects, collaboration, writing, research, and more to solve the global ecological multi-crisis.
I am getting started, and January 2024 is the initial launch phase!
So far you can find information and prior work as background and back story on my work and collaborative work with others. If you are interested in understanding and participating positively in the great project of Life on Earth, grounded in an ecological and ecosystemic perspective, I think you will find many ideas and actions here to be of interest.

Dan Fiscus
Dan is R&D Scientist with Berkeley Springs Instruments, Frostburg, Maryland, and Guest Senior Research Scholar with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. He is also a self-employed consultant, researcher, speaker, and activist with ecosystemics.org.
He has 30 years of research, teaching, and service experience and has published articles in soil ecology, ecosystem ecology, theoretical ecology, sustainability, and regenerative economics. He co-authored two books in sustainability science – Foundations for Sustainability: A Coherent Framework of Life–Environment Relations (2019) with Brian Fath, and Flourishing Within Limits to Growth: Following Nature’s Way (2015) with Sven Jørgensen and others.
He was Adjunct Professor, Excelsior University (2022, 2023) and developed two online courses as subject matter expert in sustainability. SUST601 Environmental Sustainability and SUST602 Sustainability Science are two of three courses in a certificate in Sustainable Practices available to students in the Master of Business Administration and Master of Public Administration programs.
Dan is book Series Co-Editor, Science of Sustainable Systems, Elsevier (2021 to present). He was assistant professor at Frostburg State University (FSU, 2007-2012), with teaching and research in forest ecology and sustainability. As Sustainability Liaison with FSU (2012-2016), he led creation of the President’s Advisory Council for Sustainability and advised students who created the Student Sustainability Fee. He co-founded the Western Maryland Food Council (WMFC, 2015) and served as Council Coordinator (2019-2020). With WMFC, he helped convene partners collaborating for food system change. Dan’s current work focuses on R&D for new applications of ultrasonic sensors and science reform and related solutions for the chronic, systemic, global ecological multi-crisis. He has a PhD in environmental science, masters degree in ecology with studies in biomathematics, and undergraduate degree in electrical engineering.
Dan works, lives, and grew up in the Appalachian region of Western Maryland. For fun, Dan plays ultimate Frisbee and soccer (football), enjoys hiking, music, poetry, composting, and loves time with his family, children, and grandchildren.
