Integrating paradigm and applications
A major focus of the work and offerings of ecosystemics.org is to demonstrate why it is crucial to develop applications and solutions that fit with holistic, organic, living system (HOLS) science.
For one thing, so-called “solutions” to aspects of the global ecological multi-crisis – climate disruption and many others – that are based on reductionist, objectivity-focused, analytical, mechanistic (ROAM) science are not actually solutions. These are in fact causes of the systemic crisis problems.
The bullseye diagram (concentric rings) has “system of ideas” in the center as the cause of our systemic crisis. If we change the center to be more based on HOLS science, and with the next circle out as technology, the next one is culture, then on the surface of the outermost circle we’d predict solutions with positive impacts.
Why make sure all applications / solutions addressing planetary ecological crisis are fully integrated and grounded in HOLS science?
a. Solve a problem or crisis truly – don’t solve one problem and generate two new problems
b. Solve it once – don’t do a partial effort and “kick the can down the road”
c. Get the benefit of multiplier / amplifier effects – create actions with positive externalities, like what Life does; act with eco-mimicry
d. Solve 2, 3, 4, or more problems at once in mutualistic ways – like the approach of the folks at the Multisolving Institute (link coming soon)
e. Get maximum system change leverage as explained by Donella Meadows – she wrote that all other system aspects flow from the paradigm, and that if you change the paradigm, you change the whole system
